Quick answer
Say Om Namah Shivaya once for each bead of a 108-bead mala, starting beside the sumeru. Because the mantra is short, one mala of 108 usually takes 4 to 6 minutes, so many people chant 3, 5 or 11 malas in a sitting.
Where Om Namah Shivaya comes from
Om Namah Shivaya is one of the most widely chanted Hindu mantras and the central mantra of Shaivism. It is called the Panchakshara, the five-syllable mantra: na, mah, shi, va, ya, without the Om. Without the Om, it first appears in the Shri Rudram of the Krishna Yajurveda, in the phrase namah shivaya cha shivataraya cha, and it also appears in the Rudrashtadhyayi of the Shukla Yajurveda.
It is the first mantra in the Japo app's list.

How to chant it 108 times
- Take the mala in your right hand and start beside the sumeru. See how to do japa with a mala.
- Say Om Namah Shivaya once, then move one bead. Aloud, whispered or silently are all traditional.
- At the sumeru, one mala is done. Turn the mala for the next round.
Short mantras are easy to rush. Let each repetition be whole; the three voices of japa explains why the tradition cares more about attention than speed.
