What it does

Japo is written in English, हिन्दी, ગુજરાતી, తెలుగు and ಕನ್ನಡ. It comes with 27 mantras to choose from, from Om Namah Shivaya, Radhe Radhe and the Hare Krishna Mahamantra to the Gayatri, Mahamrityunjaya, Navkar and Waheguru, and you can write your own in any script. As you count, the mantra floats gently above the mala in your own script. All of it is free.

How it works

  1. Choose the app's language in Settings, or let it follow your phone.
  2. Make a practice. Pick a mantra from the list, grouped by deity and tradition, or type your own.
  3. Count. A long mantra like the Gayatri is shown on the counter in a short form that fits, and in full where there is room.
  4. Add a focus photo if you like. A picture of your own behind the mala for this practice, like Radha Krishna for Radhe Radhe, dimmed as much as you want. It stays on your phone.

What it feels like

You open Japo in Gujarati. The buttons read in your language, and ૐ નમઃ શિવાય floats above the strand as the beads go by. Your grandmother uses the same app on her phone in Hindi, with her own mantra typed in by hand. See how Om Namah Shivaya is counted.

Who it is for

Families who chant in different languages, people whose mantra is not on any list, and anyone who wants to read their mantra in the script they learned it in.

Frequently asked questions

Are the mantras free?

Yes. All 27 mantras, your own mantras and all five languages are free.

Does Japo play the mantra aloud?

No. Mantras are text only: no audio, and no translations of the mantra itself. Japo counts; the chanting is yours.

Can I add a mantra that is not on the list?

Yes. Type any mantra or name, in any script, and it becomes a practice with its own count and history.

Begin your next mala.

Japo is a japa counter that feels like the real thing. Pull a bead with your thumb, feel a soft tick, and pick up exactly where you stopped. Counting, history and goals are free.
