About Japo
A quiet japa counter, made in Mumbai by IdeaForgeLabs.
What Japo is
Japo is a japa and naam jap counter for iPhone: a real mala you pull with your thumb, a count that is never lost, and nothing else in the way. It is written in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Telugu and Kannada, and shows your mantra in your own script. Counting, history, insights and goals are free for everyone. Japo Plus is a single purchase that adds automatic backup and the mala collection.
Why it exists
Most japa apps on the App Store are tap counters with a lot around them: ads, streaks, leaderboards, subscriptions. Those can be good for some people. Japo was made for the person who wants the opposite: to sit, close their eyes and chant, with something that counts the way a mala does and then gets out of the way.
That idea decides what Japo leaves out on purpose:
- No ads, no account, no sign-up, no analytics. What you chant stays on your phone. Japo has no server of its own.
- No streaks, scores or leaderboards. A missed day is a day, not a failure, and japa is not a competition.
- No nagging. Reminders are gentle, optional, and stop asking if you stop opening them.
- No meanings or audio for mantras. A mantra's meaning and practice belong to your tradition and your teacher. Japo counts.
How it is made
Japo is built by IdeaForgeLabs, a small studio in Mumbai. The beads, the sumeru and the tassel are Japo's own artwork. The mantra list is the traditional text of 27 widely chanted mantras, the same list you can read on the mantras page. Every claim on this website is checked against the app itself; if you find one that is wrong, please tell us.
